Overview

Built in 1929, the Civic Theatre is the largest surviving atmospheric cinema in Australasia and holds international significance.

Maynard Marks approached Sansom to provide a remedial solution to waterproof the retaining walls and floors of the dressing rooms within the lower-level basement.  Following recent flooding in the Theatre, caused by burst pipes, free water had continued to ingress into the dressing rooms.

Our Involvement

As a Heritage New Zealand Category 1 building, our design choice had to consider the impact the chosen solution would have on the historic structure. The Newton System is the only waterproofing system that is reversible and does not induce any further stress or strain.

Instructed by Auckland Unlimited and working with Alaska, we provided a design that required a combined solution. Newton System 500 was installed along the walls to manage any seepage, which was collected and diverted to a safe discharge point via the Newton Baseboard drainage channel.

Across the floor, dampness and cracks had appeared, so the application of Aquaguard, a 3-coat fibre-reinforced epoxy resin floor coating system, was applied.

The system was installed within 5 days to ensure that the timetable for the next Wintergarden performance was not impacted.
