Overview
This large-scale industrial project involved the installation of TPO membrane roofing across two connected roofs, covering approximately 1,700 square metres. The scope included managing roughly 90 large plinths and numerous penetrations through the roofing structure.
With tight timeframes and technical complexity, particularly regarding the specialised membrane installation and custom penetration solutions, this project demanded comprehensive solutions.
In addition to our roofing division, Sansom’s tanking and facade divisions are also involved in the delivery of this project.
Our Involvement
Leveraging our expertise across multiple construction disciplines, our team utilised TPO membrane from Viking. The project demanded significant logistical planning, particularly for material movement and installation sequencing, as the installation process required careful handling of large rolls, each weighing about 200 kilograms and measuring four metres in length.
One of the primary challenges was developing bespoke solutions for hundreds of penetrations through the membrane, requiring collaboration between our team, suppliers, architects, facade engineers, and the client. We successfully created custom details by combining different standard approaches to meet the project’s unique requirements.
Throughout this project, Sansom maintained a flexible workforce of 10-12 skilled workers on site continuously for 3 months, who could efficiently switch between roofing and tanking work as needed. This ability to deploy such a sizeable workforce gave us a significant advantage in meeting the project’s aggressive schedule, especially considering that some competitors typically operate with fewer than ten total employees.
Outcome
The main roof section was successfully completed on schedule, enabling the installation of equipment. Our team’s dedication combined with strong support from the office for technical detailing, was crucial to this achievement.
The experience gained from this project, particularly regarding large-scale installations and bespoke penetration details, has enhanced Sansom’s capabilities for future projects.
